HARM REDUCTION CAFE – A NEW AND INNOVATIVE PROJECT.

This is an excellent and innovate project put together by some of the leading lights in the field. Well worth a look, an excellent resource. Check it out when you have the time.

WHY HAVE A CAFE?

WHAT IS IT?

peopleThe Harm Reduction Cafe is an attempt to increase the sense of connectedness in the harm reduction community. Over the years, we’ve met people at conferences and other events who share a common goal or philosophy. But not everyone gets to go to a conference, and even when they do we still meet people who feel isolated for the rest of the year.

What we want to do with this site is provide a way of getting passionate harm reduction advocates to meet more regularly both online (in the Virtual Cafe) and in person at Cafe events. We (HIT) will be organising a number of these get togethers for free around the UK, which will all be announced here and on our Facebook and Twitter profiles. But we are also giving you the tools to set up your own events. You can meet other advocates here andannounce any events you’re planning.

WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM?

The idea to provide a platform for grassroots networking in this way comes from putting together a couple of other ideas. One is the Skeptics in the Pub movement that promoted science and sceptical thinking by small groups getting together in pubs around the world. The other is Social Media Cafes at which small businesses get to meet and get advice from social media advocates.

To us, putting these ideas together and adding a harm reduction focus is a perfectly logical progression.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

You can get involved with the project in any (or all) of the following ways:

  • Come to a cafe event: have a look and see if there is an event coming up in your area and meet other harm reduction advocates.
  • Start your own: if there isn’t a meeting in your area then start one. Promote it here and in your local area or services.
  • Join in at the Virtual Cafe: the Virtual Cafe is just our name for our site forum where you can discuss general harm reduction and get support for some of the challenges faced.
  • Help us develop: we’d love to have more activism tools on the site, so if you already have some we can use let us know. If you’re developing some then also think about using people in the Virtual Cafe to help you.

  4. Cafe Scientifique, which got expert speakers to give brief talks about controversial topics in cafes and wine-bars around the UK, followed by an open discussion, has been running since the late 90s – but I don’t know if it is still going. I did two talks on legal regulation of drugs and teaching safer drug use, way back (Nottingham and Somewhere-Else), and it generated great argument, laughter, and some friction… stopping just short of threatening anger at one event…
